U.S. Men’s National Team defender Miles Robinson delivered a poignant and timely message on the topic of unity with a week to go until the FIFA World Cup kicks off.

The largest World Cup to date, with FIFA having increased the number of participating nations from 36 to 48 and games from 64 to 104, this tournament will also be the first to be played across three nations, with 11 venues in the U.S., three in Mexico, and two in Canada.

It comes at a time of significant geopolitical and societal tensions both within the U.S. and around the world. But looking ahead to the World Cup, Robinson remains hopeful that the coming together of fans from all walks of life can help to bridge gaps.

Speaking on CNN, the 29-year-old was asked if he felt any sense of connection between himself, his teammates, and competitors during such competitions, perhaps acting as “a moment of unity.”

“Definitely. I think in general, soccer is such a massive sport. It's the most popular sport in the world. It really brings people together,” Robinson said.

“And the fact that this World Cup is in the United States, it's a perfect opportunity for the world to come together, for the U.S. to come together and recognize that we're far more alike than unalike because we all love watching a sport that's so passionate, that has all these different fan bases of diverse cultures coming together and just competing and trying your best and trying to succeed.

“And that's something that I think is so powerful in sports in general, but specifically soccer, because it's so popular.”

FC Cincinnati star Robinson, a regular fixture in Mauricio Pochettino’s rosters since he took charge in 2024, is a likely candidate to start for the USMNT this summer, should the Argentine opt to go with a back three, which appears to suit his team so well in the latter stages of 2025.

Indeed, Pochettino started with three center backs in their 3-2 win over Senegal on Sunday, with Robinson one of the 10 players to come on at halftime, taking over from Mark McKenzie.

The size of Robinson’s role could also depend on the injury status of Chris Richards, who last played for Crystal Palace back on May 17 in a 2-2 draw at Brentford in the Premier League, during which he picked up an ankle injury.

While he didn’t play against Senegal, Richards was spotted training individually on Wednesday, as per CBS Sports, and was named to Pochettino’s final roster for the World Cup on June 1.

With their final pre-tournament friendly against Germany scheduled for Saturday at Chicago’s Soldier Field, the USMNT will then turn their focus to the World Cup itself, where they have been drawn into Group D along with Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye.
