EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — The University of Southern Indiana women’s soccer team are set to face Tennessee State in the OVC tournament semifinals.
The Screaming Eagles earned their first Ohio Valley Conference tournament win in program history last week in a 2-0 win over Southeast Missouri State. They then used that momentum to score another shut-out in the quarterfinals, a 3-0 match against Eastern Illinois.
Now all that is left in the conference tournament is teams USI was not able to get a win against. The Screaming Eagles tied on the road against Little Rock on October 5th, 1-1. Tennessee Tech got the better of them in a 2-0 match on October 16th. And Lindenwood rallied with a late comeback on October 19th, to knock off Southern Indiana 2-1.
“We’ve never beat Tech, so what,” said head coach Eric Schoenstein. “And that’s not that big of a deal cause we’re going to go in there with a focus, we’re going to go in there with a belief cause I believe in this roster. I believe in the leadership. You know we’ve got 30 women that I know are going to step up and be there focused and ready to go.”
With the energy the team has built through this postseason run, they say they’re playing with a chip on their shoulder and are up for the challenge in the semis.
Defender Charli Grafton said, “I mean they’re a really good team overall, but I mean so are we. We’re not really scared of them. We’re going to get out there just keep playing how we have been playing these last two games. Just high press and put the ball in the back of the net.”
The Screaming Eagles face the Golden Eagles Thursday at 4 p.m. in Cookeville, Tennessee. The match will be streamed on ESPN Plus.
