On Wednesday morning, USC suffered a notable loss when it was reported that projected 2026 starting tight end Walker Lyons plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal. However, Lyons was not the only significant departure of the day. Defensive lineman Devan Thompkins reportedly also plans to enter the portal.
After seeing limited action in his first two years on campus, Thompkins has emerged as a key player on USC's defensive line over the past two seasons. He finished the 2025 regular season with 31 total tackles, three sacks, two passes defended, and a forced fumble.
Thompkins was expected to again play a major role for the Trojans as a redshirt senior in 2026. However, it appears he will instead look elsewhere for his final season of eligibility.
With Thompkins's departure, USC will look to younger players like Jide Abasiri and Jahkeem Stewart to play bigger roles on the defensive line next season. It would also not be surprising if the Trojans attack the transfer portal in search of some veteran reinforcments at the position.
