As the NFL Scouting Combine gets underway, several draft prospects are meeting with the media and talking about potential links and connections to specific NFL franchises. One of those players, USC defensive end Anthony Lucas, fits the bill at a position of need for the Chicago Bears, and he has collegiate connections to Chicago's franchise quarterback, Caleb Williams.
On Wednesday, Lucas spoke with reporters about his opportunity to play for the USC Trojans with Williams, where the Bears quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in 2023. Lucas played three seasons for the Trojans after transferring from Texas A&M and is coming off his best collegiate season where he totaled three sacks. Williams and Lucas played just one season together, but the defensive end had plenty to say about their time together, and has enjoyed watching him at the NFL level.
"He's a great guy, I was locker mates with him, I was able to experience everything that he brings to the table, he's a great leader, great guy to be around," Lucas said, via CHGO. "It was great (watching him in Chicago), it was everything I expected. I got to see him first-hand and really carried the team that we were on, and in the league, he's doing what he's got to do."
Lucas also discussed his informal meeting with the Bears.
"It was more of chopping it up, talking ball, and they were seeing what else they could pick my brain about, more conversations about getting to know the person I was getting recruited by," Lucas said.
It's an interesting perspective from Lucas who has gotten to see the real trajectory of Caleb Williams, from his collegiate to professional career. The USC connection, and the fact that Lucas plays a position of need for the Bears, could lead Chicago to connect the dots and reunite the two Trojan teammates, if the opportunity presents itself. Currently, Lucas projects as a Day 2 or Day 3 selection.
