The Super Bowl is not the only massive sporting event this weekend. Friday marks the opening ceremony for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.
USC’s Olympic heritage is unmatched. The Trojans have produced the most Olympians and most medalists of any university in the United States. However, due to Southern California not exactly being a prime location for winter sports, nearly all of the Trojans’ Olympians have competed at the summer games.
There are, however, a few Trojans to have participated in the Winter Olympics (the superior Olympics in my humble opinion, as a native New Englander). Randy Gardner was a notable pairs figure skater who finished fifth, just off the medal stand, at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. He competed again at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, and once again finished in the top 10 but didn't medal.
We will be getting another USC Winter Olympian this year, as former USC NCAA champion swimmer Carsten Vissering will compete for the United States in bobsled.
Perhaps in an alternate universe, my ski racing career wound up taking off and I became USC’s first ever Winter Olympics medalist. Alas, we will have to wait until LA 2028 to see the Trojans on a global stage.
