Saturday marked the first four rounds of the 2026 MLB Draft. In the second round, the Athletics selected USC pitcher Mason Edwards with the 47th overall pick.
Edwards finished the 2026 season with a record of 8-0 and an impressive 2.07 ERA. He struck out 169 batters, the most by a USC pitcher since Mark Prior in 2001. Recently, he became the first Trojan to earn first-team All-American honors in 11 years.
Heading into the draft, there was a lot of speculation about Edwards as a first round pick. While that did not happen, he is still the highest-drafted Trojan since 2009.
After more than half a century of calling Oakland home Athletics are currently in their second season playing in Sacramento. However, their plan is to move to Las Vegas before the end of the decade, and will likely be there by the time that Edwards reaches the major league should he sign with the team.
The remaining 16 rounds of this year’s MLB Draft will be held on Sunday. We will see if any additional Trojans hear their names called.
