Folarin Balogun notched the goal in the 45th minute for the USMNT in their World Cupround of 32 matchup against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, July 1 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. He then broke out in a tribute to NBA legend LeBron James for his celebration.
This makes the score 1-0 and comes after Balogun had a goal recalled earlier in the half for offsides.
The United States won Group D after storming out the gate with a 4-1 win over Paraguay and following that up with a 2-0 victory over Australia. The dropped their group finale 3-2 to Turkey with many of the starters resting on the bench.
USMNT star Christian Pulisic was injured after someone kicked him in the left calf in the opener against Paraguay. He sat out the Australia match but came off the bench to provide the team a boost in the finale. The Hershey, Pennsylvania, native was in the starting lineup for the round of 32 match.
Balogun had a brace in the first group fixture against the South American side and is the only USMNT player to score more than one goal so far in the tournament.
The United States is a co-host of the 2026 World Cup along with Mexico and Canada. All three host nations made it to the knockout rounds.
The winner of the United States vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina round of 32 match will play Belgium in the round of 16.
The USMNT made it to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they lost to the Netherlands.
There is an expanded pool of 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup which created the extra knockout round, the round of 32.
