Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly received a contract extension offer that would keep him in charge of the USA’s men’s national football team through 2030, after he led them to their best-ever showing in a World Cup group stage.

Pochettino’s current contract is set to expire after the ongoing World Cup. According to The Athletic, the US Soccer Federation and Pochettino had been discussing a new deal for about three months.

US Soccer Federation CEO JT Batson had spoken publicly about their negotiations with Pochettino as recently as late May, when the Argentine reportedly had talks with Serie A side AC Milan. According to publicly available data, Pochettino is among football’s highest-paid coaches at roughly $4 million per year, excluding add-ons.

The former Tottenham and PSG manager’s tenure with the USA didn’t actually start well, as he became the first head coach since Jurgen Klinsmann in 2015 to lose three in a row. However, Pochettino’s World Cup performance so far has silenced doubters.

We told the federation we are open, but we don’t want to distract when all the energy needs to be with my players.”

“If the American people start to show passion in our sport too, why not be here being part of something that can create a legacy? The legacy is not to win the World Cup. Of course, we want to win, but that (connection) is the legacy we need if one day we want to be very successful and be consistent,” he continued.

Fans and pundits have long assumed that Pochettino may leave the USA after the World Cup. However, it seems that the Argentine has found his calling with the Stars and Stripes.
