Mauricio Pochettino is under major pressure to lead the U.S. men's national team to success at the 2026 World Cup, not least because of how much the Argentine coach is making.

U.S. Soccer fired Gregg Berhalter as head coach in the summer of 2024, a drastic move that came just one year after the federation re-hired Berhalter to lead the USMNT through the 2026 World Cup.

But the team's failure on home soil at the 2024 Copa América led to a coaching change. In came Pochettino, one of the most highly regarded managers in world soccer. Though the Argentine had coached big clubs like Chelsea, PSG and Tottenham, the U.S. job represented Pochettino's first foray into the international game.

Still, Pochettino commanded an unprecedentedly high salary to take over. Let's break down what the coach makes.

What is Mauricio Pochettino's USMNT salary?

According to U.S. Soccer's most recent tax information, Pochettino is making $6,040,600 in base salary when annualizing the figure in the filing.

According to figures from Salary Leaks, that makes Pochettino the third-highest-paid international men's coach behind England’s Thomas Tuchel and Brazil’s Carlo Ancelotti.

That also means Pochettino is making more than three times as much as USWNT head coach Emma Hayes, as well as more than three times as much as his predecessor, Berhalter.

U.S. Soccer is helping to pay Pochettino's salary through a donation from hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin.

When does Mauricio Pochettino's contract expire?

Pochettino's contract will run through the end of the 2026 World Cup. After the tournament ends, the 54-year-old is widely expected to part ways with the USMNT.

The Argentine has recently been linked with a return to Tottenham as well as Real Madrid, though both clubs have since filled their coaching vacancies.

Still, Pochettino has made no secret of his desire to return to the Premier League at some point."Yeah, I watch a lot," he said in a December interview with the BBC. "The Premier League is the best in the world. Of course, I miss it.

"I am so happy in the USA, but I am always thinking about returning one day. It is the most competitive league, and of course, I would love to come back again."

In March, Pochettino did leave the door slightly open to signing on with U.S. Soccer beyond the World Cup.

"Who knows what is going to happen? Like I said, we are open," he said. "But why not if we are happy and the federation is happy?"
