The United States team paid tribute to late player Johnny Gaudreau after winning men's ice hockey gold at the Milan/Cortina Winter Olympics on Sunday.

They beat top rivals Canada 2-1 in overtime and the players' thoughts were with their former team-mate, who was killed along with his brother in August 2024 after their bikes were struck by an alleged drunk driver in New Jersey.

Forward Matthew Tkachuk and defenceman Zach Werenski skated around the ice with a Gaudreau's jersey and the entire team took a photo with Gaudreau’s young children.

"He’s on everybody’s mind," US captain Auston Matthews said.

"We’ve had his jersey in the locker room every game. So many guys on this team grew up with him and were close with him and here with us in spirit. It’s awesome."
