FIFA's decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s suspension was met with open arms by U.S. Soccer on Sunday, July 5.
Balogun had been facing a one-game ban following a red card incident against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup's round of 32. But FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee reversed the punishment, setting the stage for the star striker to play in the USMNT’s round of 16 match against Belgium on July 6.
In a statement released Sunday, U.S. Soccer said it was satisfied with the outcome and eager to move forward ahead of one of the team’s biggest matches of the tournament.
"We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow," U.S. Soccer said. "Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans."
Rather than continuing to discuss the disciplinary process, U.S. Soccer’s statement emphasized a desire to put the matter behind the team and concentrate entirely on its matchup with Belgium.
Balogun has been a key contributor for the USA during the World Cup, and his availability puts the squad at full strength as it attempts to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
