Uruguay's trip from Cancun to Miami, where they play their World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia on Monday, has been delayed due to a check-in error, FIFA told dpa.

"The airline has apologized for the inconvenience. FIFA remained in close contact with the Uruguayan national team throughout the delay," the football governing body said.

It's unclear what the original plan was and how it was affected.

According to coach Marcelo Bielsa, the delay won't affect the preparation for the match.

"The flight hasn't caused any problems," he said.

Unlike many media outlets, he didn't mention travel chaos and instead brushed off the complications. Bielsa also didn't address the length of the flight delay.

His press conference, originally scheduled for 6:45 pm (2245 GMT), began at around 8:30 pm.

Earlier, The Athletic news portal and others had quoted an association spokesperson who blamed FIFA for the delay.

During the World Cup, Uruguay will be based at the Mayakoba Training Centre. The facility is located about a 45-minute drive from Cancun International Airport.

Following their match against Saudi Arabia, they will face Cape Verde and Spain in Group
