The Zac Gallen situation is one of the most interesting I have seen in quite some time. He entered free agency with his representation believing he could get a 5-year deal for big money. He remains unsigned. All indications are he wants to be with a team by spring training. If he has truly run out of options could Arizona come in with a Jordan Montgomery type of deal - 2 years with the second being a player option? Probably not at a straight $20 million, would likely have to be for less or with a lot deferred. Arizona is already at or near the top of their payroll for 2026, but Gallen is well liked by the Diamondbacks so we will see.

Torey Lovullo on free agent Zac Gallen:

"Zac's an incredible pitcher. I don't know exactly what's going on. I don't know why he's still out there. But if something happens and he walks back into this clubhouse, we would welcome him with open arms."

All quiet on the Zac Gallen front from what I have heard. Diamondbacks still exploring creative ways to see if a deal can work. But not much movement as of now.

SOURCE: Zac Gallen is facing a thin market as clubs hesitate on years. The Diamondbacks, Cubs, and Mets have stayed active in discussions on the starter. A bounce-back second half in ’25 should earn him the worthwhile deal he’s targeting. I expect movement before next week ends.

The present day value of Zac Gallens contract will come in around $12-13 million for competitive balance purposes.

Jordan Montgomery fired Scott Boras will be interesting to see if Zac Gallen follows suit. Waiting and waiting and waiting did not benefit Gallen.

Zac Gallen will be paid roughly $2.8 million per year for 5 years starting in year 6 of this contract.

Gallen had multiyear offers but preferred to stay in Arizona

So Scott Boras cost him a minimum of $9M-$10M by having him reject the qualifying offer. What a brilliant agent

Zac Gallen career stats to keep an eye on this year:

- 48 K’s behind Brandon Webb for 2nd all time as a Dback

- 29 starts behind Webb for 2nd

- 3 wins ahead of Merrill Kelly for 3rd all time

Zac Gallen pre-trade deadline: 5.60 ERA, 1.35 WHIP.

Zac Gallen post-trade deadline: 3.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP.

Just a reminder.

Gallen could’ve gone to other teams on multi-year deals. He took this far less lucrative deal to remain in AZ. His hope is he performs well enough that he can earn a multi-year offer from the Dbacks, as he desires to remain an AZ resident. He’s only 30 yrs old… Very possible he pitches well enough to compel the team to offer him a 3-4 year deal after this season…one that provides a meaningful “home team” discount.

This is a great point. The Dbacks would have gladly done a deal with Gallen in the past that would have given him the security of a long-term deal and them cost certainty but Boras very rarely allows his guys to do those type of deals before free agency. So Gallen gambles and now will only make $8 million this year with $14 million deferred. Ultimately it’s the agent working for the player but most players trust Boras. Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way they planned.

And a very important one. DBacks have done very little, if anything, to improve the club for 2026 in the toughest and best division in baseball. Insanity is trying the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. DBacks fans will be crying in their beer once again this season. Sorry for the brutal honesty, but that's reality.

This is not correct.

The bullpen is clearly better.

The defense is better at the hot corners. which will help the pitching.

I would put them at 84-80 right now as long as Corbin doesn't miss more than 2 weeks.
