The Milwaukee Brewers acquired not one, not two, but three pitchers at the trade deadline.
One of those was a left-handed reliever in JoJo Romero, though sadly, he remains on the 15-day Injured List.
Romero, 29, will definitely be back this season, and that's music to the Brewers' ears as their bullpen already saw a massive boost when Antonio Senzatela made his season debut last night.
Elsewhere, outfielder Sal Frelick isn't exactly nearing an immediate return. Manager Pat Murphy doesn't expect him to be out too much longer, but he'll need a rehab outing, so that'll slightly slow things down.
According to FSRWI's Hunter Baumgardt, "Sal Frelick has initiated throwing and hitting progressions."
What exactly does that mean? Mid-August is his targeted return date, though obviously that will depend on how things turn out during his time at High-A or Triple-A, wherever the Brewers decide to put him.
The 26-year-old last appeared for the Brewers on Friday, July 17, but was pulled after his first at-bat of the game.
Frelick's shoulder seems to be getting better, but it's not an ideal injury for an outfielder, especially one with as much talent as Frelick. No one will forget his viral throw from center field in the playoffs last year, and that's the type of spark Milwaukee needs late in the 2026 season if they want to make a run.
Currently in the midst of his fourth year with the Brewers, Frelick is slashing .236/.301/.330. He's not exactly replaceable, even with Luis Lara around, and his depth will be crucial to their success, especially now that Brandon Lockridge is close to a return as well.
When looking at where things stand, Baumbardt noted that Romero will "likely return in mid-to-late August."
Overall, that's still a great timeline to get him ramped up and ready for the postseason. This is a guy who's dealing with an abdomen issue, and it's kept him out of action since Sunday, July 12.
The California native has a 3.35 ERA this season in his 44 appearances. That number is up quite a bit from the 2.07 it was a year ago, but he still is a 0.7 WAR player with a strong 1.30 WHIP.
As long as there aren't any setbacks, the Brewers could, optimistically speaking, have both Frelick and Romero back in the middle of the month. At the very least, they should both be ready before September, allowing them a full month to get back into the fold before the playoffs.
