The New Orleans Pelicans have made another offseason move as they signed center Caleb Houstan to a training camp deal as they figure out what to do with their final roster spot.
The Pelicans will now have 19 confirmed players in camp. They have one open roster spot to dole out, though more could come with trades. They also have a two-way spot they can assign as well.
This is going to be a very interesting training camp, as there will be plenty of people competing for minutes and roster spots with this new coaching staff and in the second year of this new regime.
Here is where the team currently stands:
PG Jeremiah Fears
PG Dejounte Murray
Combo Guard Jordan Poole
SG Jordan Hawkins
SG Jaron Pierre Jr. - Two-Way Contract
G Kobe Bufkin - Training Camp Contract
It appears that this group could see a major shake-up before the season starts in this group. New Orleans is sort of in a stand-still because of their money situation and Poole/Hawkins are trying to moved to free up money. Trades take two partners, though, so it's unclear if they'll be able to do that.
Right now, the major target is Bennedict Mathurin. While he wouldn't help the team's lack of scoring, he's a young and exciting athlete with a history of at least putting up some points.

The Pelicans did add to their shooting here a little bit, potentially, signing Houstan to a training camp deal on Friday, the move that inspired this post. He's someone that the staff is familiar with and has been an improving shooter in the league. That's the only thing this unit really needed, as it was already the strongest unit on the team, for now. Still, they can always use more three-and-D players.

This offseason has made it very clear that New Orleans feels much stronger about this group than most. Missi and Matkovic have been targeted this offseason by a few teams around the league, but they have been rebuffed. The Pelicans value them as depth and the potential that they have. It was weak last year and will need Missi and Queen to have developed a ton this offseason in order to show real improvement.
