The opening women’s hockey game at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics will no longer take place as planned. Team Canada’s Women’s hockey matchup, set for Thursday at Rho Arena, has been pushed back after an illness spread across the Finland women’s national ice hockey team.
Officials decided it wasn’t safe or fair to go ahead with the game. Rather than risk player health or force a shorthanded team onto the ice, organizers chose to delay the contest until the situation is under control.

Per an ESPN report, Finland’s women’s hockey team had its tournament opener against Canada’s women’s national ice hockey team on Thursday postponed after a stomach virus tore through the locker room, leaving the roster severely depleted.
“The decision was taken following consultations with medical professionals after cases of norovirus were identified within Team Finland,” the official statement said.
“While all stakeholders recognise the disappointment of not playing the game as originally scheduled, this was a responsible and necessary decision that reflects the spirit of the Olympic Games and the integrity of the competition,” Olympics.com also announced in a statement.
Word of the postponement came shortly after Finland wrapped up an early-afternoon practice, with only eight skaters and two goalies able to take the ice. The other 13 players are currently in quarantine or isolation after a norovirus outbreak that started affecting the squad Tuesday night, creating health and competitive concerns.
The game has now been moved to Feb. 12 as officials try to give the team time to recover and return to full strength. Per SportsNet, Canada’s opener will now be Saturday against Switzerland.
