Just like that, Selection Sunday is over. The UNC women's basketball team, which lost its ACC quarterfinal matchup, gets a fresh start in the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina (26-7, 14-4 ACC), which earned a 4-seed in the Fort Worth Region, will host 13-seed Western Illinois on Friday, March 20 at a time TBA. The Tar Heels, making their seventh-straight appearance in the Big Dance, are hoping to make their second-consecutive Sweet 16 trip.
The Roughnecks (26-5, 16-4) won both the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships, dispatching Lindenwood in the OVC tournament final on March 7. Western Illinois sports a dangerous offense, led by Mia Nicastro, who is fourth in Division I at 24.2 points per game.
Defense is UNC's calling card, as it limits opponents to 59 points per game. The Tar Heels held five of their last six opponents under 70 points, with the lone exception Virginia, a game in which the Tar Heels won 82-70.
North Carolina sports a deep, guard-heavy lineup led by forward Nyla Harris (team-best 11.2 points, 6.7 rebounds per game). Lanie Grant (10.6 PPG) is a star in the making at point guard, Indya Nivar (10.3 PPG) is having her best year as a senior, while UCLA transfer Elina Aarnisalo (10.2 PPG) is a welcomed addition.
Also playing in Carmichael Arena this coming weekend are 5-seed Maryland and 12-seed Murray State, whom UNC or the Leathernecks will face on Sunday in the Round of 32.
If you're in Chapel Hill next weekend, you should go support the Tar Heels. It's pretty special that March Madness comes through Chapel Hill.
