UNC NC State set unique non-conference game for 2026-27

We are still months away from the start of the 2026-27 college basketball season as Michael Malone and his staff prepare for the first year of a new era for the Tar Heels. This offseason, Malone and the Tar Heels have worked hard on the recruiting trail for the future of the program.

There are still a lot of questions left regarding next season, but on Thursday, a new report out suggests the Tar Heels are adding a ACC rival to their schedule — in a unique way.

Cory Smith of PackPower247 reported that NC State and UNC are set to face off at the Greensboro Coliseum in a non-conference game on December 15th. Inside Carolina confirmed the report shortly after.

BREAKING: NC State is set to play UNC at Greensboro Coliseum in a non-conference matchup during the 2026-27 season.

The contract details aren't finalized, but @PackPower247 sources noted the game is set for Dec. 15, following the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Due to the new ACC schedule model, the Tar Heels and Wolfpack will only play once this year, just like they did for the 2025-26 season. So adding this game as a non-conference matchup ensures that they get two games in,like previous years.

NC State beat UNC in Raleigh last season under Will Wade. UNC is set to host NC State sometime in 2027 as part of the ACC schedule.
