UNC football kicker Rece Verhoff, one of the bright spots in Bill Belichick’s debut season with the Tar Heels, is back in Chapel Hill.
On Wednesday, Aug. 5, the school announced that Verhoff is back on the roster in the wake of a District Court judge in Colorado issuing a preliminary injunction that grants athletes from the 2022 high school class an additional year of eligibility.
The ruling allows athletes like Verhoff to take advantage of the NCAA's new age-based "five-for-five" rule that was implemented over the summer.
Verhoff played three seasons at Marshall before transferring to UNC for his senior year. He played without redshirting.
After the initial ruling, the NCAA issued a statement announcing it would appeal the decision. But if the order stands, Verhoff joins a room that includes LSU transfer Aeron Burrell, who was projected to be the Tar Heels’ starting kicker.
UNC’s scoring leader with 77 points in 2025, Verhoff made 19 of 23 field goals to match the fifth most by a Tar Heel in a season. He was 20-for-20 on extra-point attempts and set a program record with a 57-yard field goal at Wake Forest.
