A collegiate umpire collapsed during a Campbellsville University softball game and died, Meagan Murphy, the university's interim vice president of enrollment and marketing confirmed to The Courier Journal.
Campbellsville University hosted Union Commonwealth University during a softball double header Feb. 25.
The umpire collapsed during the first game. A game tracker shows the game was stopped at the top of the second inning, with two strikes and two balls thrown. Both games on the schedule are now listed as postponed.
A university athletic trainer on site performed CPR until EMS arrived.
“Campbellsville University is deeply saddened by the passing of the umpire who experienced a medical emergency during today’s home softball game," the school said in a statement.
“We extend our heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the umpire’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
“We are grateful to our athletic trainers, staff, and first responders for their swift and compassionate care. Out of respect for the family, no additional details will be shared at this time."
This is the second death at a softball event, as well as the third collapse at an athletic event in the Commonwealth in nine days.
The first softball-related death happened on Feb. 16. Russell County freshman softball player Brylie Northcutt was at her high school tryouts when she collapsed. Russell County coroner Mark Coots told The Courier Journal the preliminary results show Northcutt died from a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in her lungs. She was 15.
The second collapse happened Feb. 19 at West Jessamine High School just as a JV basketball game tipped off. A fan collapsed in the parking lot. West Jessamine High athletic trainer Dean Geary responded with CPR and an AED until first responders arrived. The Courier Journal reported the save. The fan has had positive progress in the last week, Geary told The Courier Journal.
Because athletic trainers are considered the health care professionals of the sideline, they often respond to life-or-death situations. The National Athletic Trainers Association, an industry organization, provides all athletic trainers nationwide access to a program called AT Cares. That program is designed to provide support from external athletic trainers trained in crisis management, to help in the aftermath of a critical incident.
AT Cares called Geary shortly after his save, he told The Courier Journal.
