MIAMI – Tatiana Suarez overcame an adversity-filled sequence early, and later became the first woman to stop Loopy Godinez inside the cage.
Despite it's UFC 327 prelim placement, Suarez (12-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) vs. Godinez (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) was an important fight for the promotion's strawweight division. Suarez defeated Godinez by rear-naked choke at the 2:29 mark of Round 2.
The first minute of the fight was a different story from the six-plus minutes that followed. Godinez stunned Suarez early with a flurry on punches. However, Suarez resorted to her wrestling and dominated the remainder of the round.
In Round 2, Suarez took Godinez down, got her back, and worked for the choke. Godinez did a decent job of hand-fighting. While she won some battles, she didn't win the war. Eventually, Suarez got what she was looking for.
Suarez, 35, has won back-to-back fights since a failed title bid vs. Zhang Weili. She bounced back with a win over Amanda Lemos prior to Saturday's bout at Kaseya Center.
Godinez, 32, had a two-fight winning streak snapped. She entered the bout having won back-to-back fights vs. Julia Polastri and Jessica Andrade. This loss was the first stoppage defeat of her pro career.
