In a women's gymnastics meet at Maples Pavilion featuring two top-10 collegiate teams and two standouts from the 2014 Paris Olympics, it was UCLA and Jordan Chiles who claimed the spotlight Saturday before a sold-out crowd of 7,024.
Chiles, who with Stanford's Ana Barbosu remains enmeshed in a controversy over who won a bronze medal in the floor exercise in Paris, scored a perfect 10 on the uneven bars, took first in the vault with a 9.925 and won the all-around competition to lead the No. 5 Bruins to a 197.775-197.425 victory. No. 10 Stanford's score was its best this season.
The floor exercise proved to be an interesting event, as neither Chiles nor Barbosu, a freshman who competes for Romania on the international stage, posted the top score. Instead, Stanford senior Anna Roberts split the floor title with the UCLA's Mika Webster-Longin (Richmond) and Tiana Sumanasekera (Pleasanton), each earning scores of 9.925. Chiles and Barbosu each scored 9.900 to tie for fourth.
UCLA's Sumanasekera and Ciena Alipio (San Jose) shared the top score of 9.950 on the balance beam.
Barbosu, who did not compete in the vault, scored 9.875 on the uneven bars and 9.900 on the beam.
Chiles scored 39.700 in the all-around, with Roberts (39.550) second and third going to Webster-Longin (39.425).
