After St. Mary’s shockingly upset No. 1 overall seed UCLA baseball in the regional opener on Saturday, the Bruins needed a win on Sunday to keep their season alive.

Going into the bottom of the ninth, UCLA was down by two runs against Virginia Tech. That’s when first baseman Mulivai Levu, who was named the Big Ten Tournament Most Valuable Player for walking it off for the Bruins in back-to-back games, stepped up to the plate.

Levu hit a solo home run in the ninth inning off Virginia Tech left-hander Madden Clement to make the score 4-5. Then, All-Big Ten First Team third baseman Roman Martin tied the game with another solo home run immediately after Levu.

To win the game, second baseman/right fielder Phoenix Call hit an RBI single to walk it off for UCLA. Call was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of the Big Ten Tournament title game, which also led to a walk-off victory for the Bruins.

Two of UCLA’s three runs before the ninth inning were off home runs from catcher Cashel Dugger and center fielder Will Gasparino in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively. Gasparino was back after serving a one-game suspension during the regional opener for malicious contact in the Big Ten Tournament title game on May 24.

What Is Next For the Bruins in the Regional Tournament?

UCLA will face St. Mary’s again on Sunday at 1 pm PT in the semifinal matchup. St. Mary’s fell to Cal Poly on Saturday, which placed St. Mary’s in the loser’s bracket alongside UCLA.

The winner of the game will face Cal Poly on Sunday night. But in order to advance to super regionals, UCLA will have to defeat Cal Poly two times. If necessary, the second game will be on Monday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins will need to win their next three games to continue on the path to the Men’s College World Series.
