Alonza Barnett III remains the biggest get for UCF and head coach Scott Frost in the transfer portal, bringing winning experience and stability to the quarterback position.
Many different media outlets have had their fair share of takes about Barnett and how he will fare in Orlando, with The Athletic being the latest.
Barnett was ranked the No. 43 signal caller in the country, falling in the fourth tier of The Athletic's rankings.
According to the list, this tier consists of "some of the stars of tomorrow, like inexperienced QBs who coaches believe in but lack a proven resume, and there are also veterans who are looking to redeem themselves and journeymen looking to make the most of their last stops."
Barnett falls into the latter description, entering his final collegiate season.
Last year, Barnett led James Madison to a College Football Playoff berth, where he shined against a talented Oregon defensive unit.
With the Dukes scoring 34 points, Barnett accounted for three total touchdowns while throwing for 273 yards passing and recording 45 yards rushing.
In the following round, the same Oregon defense blanked the Big 12-Champion Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Now, Barnett has an opportunity to perhaps sneak onto NFL Draft boards with a strong showing at the power four level with UCF.
His dual-threat ability fits Frost's scheme and the new-look, 1-2 punch of Landen Chambers and Duke Watson in the backfield should also benefit, as defenses will have to respect Barnett's ability to extend plays with his legs.
For Barnett, he has frequently talked about being a leader the team can depend on and making the most of his final year.
"I look forward to enjoying each and every game as it’s my last collegiate season…" Barnett said at a recent meet-and-greet. "Fans can expect a great brand of football, some fireworks here and there and some really consistent play."
The former First-Team All Sun Belt gunslinger has weapons at his disposal and a team that believes in him, making his potential breakout season much more of a possibility.
For the Knights, who will be seeking a return to bowl contention for the first time in multiple seasons, Barnett will be the key to how far they can go.
