Who else? New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough is next in line for a tradition Demario Davis picked up from Drew Brees. Here he is leading the team's pregame huddle before Saturday's preseason game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. It's exactly what you want to see from the second-year quarterback after the Saints made such a conscious effort to get younger and rebuild since drafting him.
Shough may not be the conventional image of a young player (he turns 27 in September), but the Saints valued his maturity and ability to lead a team. He won a couple of quarterback competitions in college between season-ending injuries. That he came out of that gauntlet with a more steady demeanor and presence appealed to them. Now he's got to back it up.
Shough was sidelined for the first Saints preseason game, as was the rest of the starting offense and defense, but we'll get a good look at him in the weeks ahead. The team will fly out to California for joint practices with the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys, plus two exhibition games on the road against those two teams. The Saints feel like they have an answer at quarterback with Shough leading the huddle. Let's see him back it up.
