Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson is the only first-round pick from the 2026 NFL Draft to not have a contract signed.

Simpson was taken with the No. 13th overall selection — a truly shocking pick considering the team’s contender status and Matthew Stafford’s closing window.

The Rams front office, however, decided to draft Stafford’s successor, believing he was better than NFL Draft experts thought (the consensus was that he had a second- or third-round grade).

Simpson has already started working hard with his new team, participating in rookie minicamp and meeting all of his new coaches ahead of training camp.

However, he has done all of that without a signed contract, as his agency seeks certain guarantees and clauses in the deal.

The money of the deal is already set, as each draft slot is given a value.

According to Spotrac, Simpson’s deal is expected to be worth $25.4 million for four years, with the fifth-year option available for the 2030 season.

Two other quarterback draft picks had been holding out as well — Fernando Mendoza and Drew Allar. Both signed their deals over the last few days as their camps got underway; now it is Simpson’s turn.

The Rams’ first training camp practice is scheduled for Sunday, making that the deadline for the team and player to reach an agreement before the real work begins.

Ty Simpson’s harsh reality

Simpson is left learning one of the more advanced offenses in the league right off the bat. He has made it no secret that the playbook and line of scrimmage changes are a lot to take in.

“[It’s like] drinking from a fire hydrant,” Simpson said during OTAs, via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.

“You’re expected [to do] a lot. The quarterback runs the show here, just how I like it. But it’s just making sure that you’re disciplined and you’re detail-oriented.”

Simpson will be tasked with fighting for the backup quarterback spot alongside Stetson Bennett. Even if he does secure that role, the Rams will not be counting on a single snap from Simpson in the regular season.

They need Stafford healthy, which means Simpson won’t see the field. With few draft picks, the Rams won’t be able to draft another successor for Stafford or even trade for one, leaving Simpson with the mantle down the line once Stafford calls it quits.
