Final score:
Twins 8, Tigers 6
Starting pitcher performance:
Bailey Ober went 5 2/3 innings in his longest start of the season to date. Ober had only given up one hit through the first five innings of the game, but ran into some trouble in the sixth inning and Justin Topa entered to bail him out of a jam. Ober struck out two in his outing and walked one.
Player of the game:
After snapping out of an 0 for 20 skid a couple days ago, Byron Buxton finished the day 3 for 4 with a walk. The center fielder ignited rallies in three different innings and scored three runs in the win, which was the Twins’ third straight.
Key moment:
It’s tough to pick just one in a game that featured a six-run first inning against all-star starter Framer Valdez, whom the Twins pursued this offseason in free agency.
The Tigers (4-8) looked like they were going to get at least one out on Luke Keaschall’s ground ball to short — they likely would not have gotten two anyways because of his speed — but Austin Martin beat the throw to second and Keaschall was safe at first, giving the Twins a situation with the bases loaded and nobody out.
The Twins scored their runs in the first inning on a wild pitch by Valdez, a Ryan Jeffers RBI groundout and hits from Josh Bell, Matt Wallner and Royce Lewis. Though the Tigers made it close in later innings of the game, scoring two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh, the Twins maintained their advantage throughout the game.
Up next:
The Twins and Tigers will finish their four-game series on Thursday afternoon with a day game set for 12:40 p.m. CT. The Twins will send Mick Abel (0-2, 11.05 ERA) to the mound while the Tigers will counter with Jack Flaherty (0-1, 7.56 ERA).
