On the first night of the MLB Draft, players nationwide in the college and high school ranks had their dreams come true. That includes Longhorns catcher Carson Tinney, who the Minnesota Twins selected in the second round. After one year in Austin, the Colorado native will now focus on getting the majors as quickly as possible and rewarding the Twins' faith.
During the 2025 campaign, Tinney posted a .326 batting average in 61 games. He also showed off his power with 35 extra-base hits, including 22 home runs. While the Longhorns' star was adjusting to a new program and conference, he made the transition seem easy.
As Tinney thrived at the plate, he also impressed in the field. He was the only player in the program to win a Gold Glove and helped the Longhorns pitchers reach their potential. That stood out to the Twins, who focused on adding as much depth to their catching pipeline as possible. They used the No.3 overall pick on Georgia Tech star Vahn Lackey.
For Texas, Saturday provided plenty of reasons to celebrate. Tinney was not the only player with Longhorns ties to hear his name called. Aiden Robbins, Ruger Riojas, and Grady Emerson were all selected within the first 100 picks. With the draft far from over, those numbers should continue to grow.
While Tinney still has some areas to improve, there is a lot for the Twins to like about his game. Despite a slightly high strikeout rate, he consistently found ways to get on base in the SEC and made pitchers pay for their mistakes. After arriving in Austin with high expectations out of the transfer portal, he did not disappoint.
As Tinney moves through the Twins' farm system, he is a player many Longhorns fans will keep an eye on.
