When the Twins placed Byron Buxton on the injured list earlier this month, the hope was that they would be giving his hip time to let it heal once and for all.
Buxton missed five games in May as he dealt with a hip injury. He missed another four games at the end of June/beginning of July only to come back and re-aggravate it in his second game back. The Twins finally placed Buxton on the injured list from July 7-20, and the center fielder had noted the improvement he had felt in his hip during that time off.
But on Tuesday night, Buxton re-aggravated the hip again, and the result was another trip to the injured list. The Twins made the move ahead of Wednesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals and after Buxton had met with Dr. Christopher Larson to receive an injection in his hip.
Manager Derek Shelton said Tuesday night that Buxton had felt something during his second at-bat. He came in after that, talked to head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta and was then removed from the game.
“We’re dealing with a hip that sometimes, it flares up,” Shelton said. “Going into the game (Tuesday), he felt.”
Luke Keaschall moved from right field to center field on Tuesday night when Buxton departed and started there again on Wednesday night.
The Twins called up infielder Tristan Gray to fill Buxton’s spot on the roster. Both Kody Clemens, who has primarily been playing second of late, and Ryan Kreidler, who has been at shortstop, can play center field, in addition to Keaschall, while Gray can move around the infield.
