INDIANAPOLIS — The first participant in the NIT championship is set. No. 1 Tulsa took down No. 1 New Mexico 74-69 at Hinkle Fieldhouse to clinch a spot in Sunday's final.

Tulsa (30-7) led for most of this game, but two JT Rock free throws with 5:01 left tied the game at 59 for New Mexico (26-11). Tulsa managed to regain control, going on an 8-0 spurt to retake the lead.

Both teams were held well below their scoring average on the season. Tulsa came into Thursday averaging 85.4 points per game while New Mexico averaged 81.5.

A game that was expected to be a high-scoring affair saw neither team go on extended scoring runs. As a result, neither team led by more than nine points, which kept the Lobos in striking distance despite trailing for most of the night.

Tulsa's balanced scoring attack got it done to send the team to the title game. While New Mexico's Jake Hall led all scorers with 18 points - and scored 15 in the second half. Tulsa had five different players reach double figures, as David Green led the way with 13 points.

In the end, Tulsa's 3-point shooting was too much for New Mexico to keep up with. The Golden Hurricane made 12 3s to the Lobos' seven. Although Tulsa cooled down following its nine made 3s in the first half, its prowess from beyond the arc proved too much.

Tulsa outrebounded New Mexico 24-16 in the second half to take a 39-38 final margin.

New Mexico stayed in the game by scoring inside. The Lobos scored 28 paint points to Tulsa's 22, but the difference wasn't enough to send them to the championship round.

Tulsa will now face the winner of Auburn and Illinois State in the NIT championship at 8 p.m. Sunday at Gainbridge.
