President Donald Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding the suspension of U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The call was first reported by The New York Times, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the conversation.
Both The Guardian and The Associated Press also reported that the White House had reached out to FIFA about reviewing the U.S. striker's red card, though they did not specify that Trump made the call.
Balogun was previously subject to a one-game suspension after he received a red card in the U.S. game against Bosnia-Herzegovina last week. On Sunday, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee announced it had suspended the red card issued to Balogun for a probationary period of one year, meaning that he’ll be able to play in an upcoming World Cup match against Belgium.

Infantino has long sought to nurture a friendly relationship with Trump, going so far as to award him a newly-created FIFA Peace Prize in 2025.
Trump on Sunday heralded the decision about Falogun’s suspension, but didn’t reference any conversation with Infantino.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!,” he wrote on Truth Social.l
FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
