So you're saying there's a chance? The Athletic's Jim Bowden examined all 30 MLB clubs and the likelihood of trading for Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal.

Bowden doesn't think the Boston Red Sox will be a factor, and his reasoning is quite simple.

"The Red Sox are searching for a right-handed middle of the order impact bat. They’re happy with their starting rotation and I’m not sure they’re good enough to trade for a rental at this point," Bowden writes.

Yes, Skubal is the two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner. But he's coming off elbow surgery and will be a free agent after the season, making any trade a dicey short-term gamble.

Bowden believes the Los Angeles Dodgers are the most likely trade partner, followed by the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.

"The Rays will be 'in' on Skubal and they’ll do it in stealth fashion as they normally do. They have the farm system to make a deal work here ... They’ll be a threat in the Skubal sweepstakes," Bowden notes.

"I can see (the Yankees) making a low-ball offer of Spencer Jones and Ben Hess and at least stay involved in the talks. If the prospect price becomes realistic, they’ll be players. Imagine Skubal, (Max) Fried, (Gerrit) Cole and (Cam) Schlittler as your October rotation," Bowden adds.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman has a different take on the Skubal trade market. He believes the Chicago Cubs are the top threat, followed by the San Diego Padres, Dodgers and Yankees.

But Heyman also offers a wrinkle, listing the Toronto Blue Jays at No. 5.

"They are highly motivated and have as many rotation injuries as anyone (tied with Detroit and Houston)," Heyman writes.

As for the Rays, he has them at No. 8.

"They tried for Shohei Ohtani (via Ken Rosenthal), Freddie Freeman and Juan Soto. They can surprise you," Heyman adds.
