Apr. 22—Two Willmar athletes have already gotten their spring sports seasons off to a good start.

The Cardinals' Maddison Molacek and Kennedy Mara have been named Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week for their accomplishments last week.

Molacek, a sophomore, had one of the top discus throws in the state last week, covering a distance of 121 feet, 6 inches. It's the seventh-best throw in the state this spring. She also had a distance of 34-8.75 in the shot put.

Mara, a junior, shot an even-par 72 to place first in New London-Spicer's Wildcat Invitational at Little Crow Golf Course. She also has one other first-place finish and a second-place finish so far this spring.

A look at other top CLC performers:

* From Alexandria — Evan Zabel in baseball;

* From Brainerd — Natalie Smith in girls track;

* From Detroit Lakes — Brynn Erickson in softball and Tyson Eckhoff in boys golf;

* From the St. Cloud Crush — Drew Lieser in baseball;

* From Sartell — Andrew Berndt in boys track, Carson Andel in boys golf; Collin Otto and Seth Davidson in boys tennis;

* And from Sauk Rapids — Ava Knutson in softball.

There appears to be a half-dozen West Central Tribune area athletes who competed in Monday's 129th Boston Marathon, according to results found on the 2025 Boston Marathon entry list found on-line. Here is a list:

* Gabriella Auspos, age 34, Spicer, time of 3 hours, 25 minutes, 9 seconds;

* Jessica Carlson, 30, Murdock, 3:18:30;

* Mary Larue, 44, Willmar, 3:37:25;

* Amy Nieland, 41, New London, 3:43:23;

* Jen Olson, 43, Olivia, 3:19:11

* Kristen Williamson, 34, Willmar, 3:24:06.

The overall winners were John Korir and Sharon Lokedi. Korir, from Kenya, won the men's race in 2:04:45. Lokedi, also from Kenya, set a course record in 2:17:22 in the women's race.

* Former Willmar Cardinal Ian Koosman is getting plenty of innings for the Creighton University baseball team. Koosman, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior right-hander, has appeared in 11 games, making eight starts. he has a 4-3 won-lost record and a 6.44 earned-run average in 36-1/3 innings. He has struck out 42, walked 17 and allowed 32 hits and 26 earned runs. Opponents are batting .234 off him.

Koosman spent a single season each at Scottsdale Community College and Paradise Valley Community College in Arizona before transferring to the Bluejays, an NCAA Division I program. He's a 2022 graduate.
