The New Orleans Pelicans are one of the more talked-about teams in the NBA right now, with the draft right around the corner, as teams wait to see how desperate they are to get into the first.
The least surprising report of the offseason was that the Pelicans have shown interest into getting back into the draft class. They are without a first-round pick this season because of the Derik Queen trade, but this is a talented group of rookies and there are plenty of players who could have caught their attention.
Getting back into the first when the only current draft asset they own is the No. 58 overall pick won't be easy. They could have to turn to trading one of their own players in order to make it happen.
That's what at least one team is hoping for. ESPN's Anthony Slater recently broke down the offseason for the Golden State Warriors, and in doing so he provided an interesting update about Murphy:
"[Murphy] could be more obtainable in this transition cycle, league sources said. Murphy is a player the [Golden State] Warriors front office has circled for years as a prime wing who fits a need, the [Steve] Kerr system and, at 25, accomplishes the goal of getting younger. The Pelicans have clung to him tightly, but league sources said New Orleans has been signaling a desire to jump into the first round of next week's draft. The Warriors have the 11th pick and control of their future firsts.
If the Pelicans were to turn to Golden State and trade Murphy to get back into the first, that would give them the No. 11 overall pick. That's a good start, plus any future picks from the Warriors are interesting given that Stephen Curry is 38 years old.
In terms of getting back into the first with Murphy, that's probably the best that they would be able to get. It is certainly a risk, because Murphy is already a near All-Star player, young and on a team-friendly deal. New Orleans does seem to do a good job of putting unjust pressure on their rookies, however.
