Trent McDuffie trade details: Chiefs salvage first-round pick from Rams in difficult salary cap decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chiefs are moving on from Trent McDuffie, according to multiple reports, sending him to the Rams in exchange for a quartet of draft picks -- including a 2026 first rounder.
McDuffie, 25, is one of the league's finest defenders. He started each of his 56 games for the Chiefs since entering the league in 2022, landing first-team All-Pro honors in 2022 and second-team All-Pro honors in 2023. His absence represents a major loss for Kansas City's defense, which had relied on his guile, cunning and physicality over the years.
The Chiefs will look to reinvest smartly in the months to come, with those draft picks -- namely that first-rounder -- likely to be central to their future plans.
With that, here's a look at the details surrounding McDuffie's high-profile move to Tinseltown.

Trent McDuffie trade details
Chiefs receive:
- 2026 first round pick (No. 29 overall)
- 2026 fifth round pick
- 2026 sixth round pick
- 2027 third round pick
Rams receive:
- CB Trent McDuffie
Kansas City fetched quite the return for McDuffie, a 25-year-old defensive maven and former first-round pick who anchored the Chiefs defense to two Super Bowls. The Chiefs grew four picks richer as a result of their transaction, landing Los Angeles' coveted 2026 first round selection (No. 29 overall).
With two first-rounders in its possession, Kansas City could attempt to create a trade package to move up the draft board. The Chiefs could use reinforcements at multiple positions, including tailback.
McDuffie, meanwhile, lands on one of the league's most well-rounded rosters. With age on his side and star light specked across Los Angeles' roster, the former Washington man and California native could make a splash in new colors.
Rams CB depth chart
| Rank | Player | Age | Signed through |
| 1. | Trent McDuffie | 25 | 2026 |
| 1. | Emmanuel Forbes Jr. | 25 | 2026 |
| 2. | Darious Williams | 32 | 2026 |
| 2. | Josh Wallace | 25 | 2026 |
| 3. | Cam Lampkin | 24 | 2027 |
| 3. | Alex Johnson | 26 | 2027 |
McDuffie will spearhead a new-look Los Angeles secondary, project to partner with veteran cornerback former first rounder Emmanuel Forbes or veteran Darious Williams in 2026. Cobie Durant fielded the majority of snaps in McDuffie's position in 2025. With Durant slated to hit the free agency market, there's a clear void at CB1, a slot McDuffie should fill with aplomb.
The Rams could add reinforcements to their cornerback room in the weeks and months to come. They have nearly $30 million in cap room at their discretion, according to Spotrac. And although they surrendered one first round pick, they have another, having landed the No. 13 selection via trade with the Falcons. That could put them in play for promising cornerbacks Jermod McCoy, Mansoor Delane or Avieon Terrell, all of whom are expected to hear their names called in the first 20 picks or so.

- Round 4, Pick No. 109

Following Wednesday's transaction, Kansas City now has nine picks in the 2026 draft. Two of those selections lie in the first round -- Andy Reid's side will pick No. 9 and No. 29 come April.
Given their treasure trove of selections -- and rumored interest in Notre Dame tailback Jeremiyah Love, who is commonly mocked to be selected somewhere inside the top-10 -- some believe Wednesday's deal could precipitate a draft-day splash that could lead to Love landing with the Chiefs.
The asking price to leapfrog inside of the top-10 will likely be high. Two first rounders might be enough to do it, though, especially if Love falls outside of the top-five.
Rams draft picks
- Round 1, Pick 13 (via Falcons)
- Round 2, Pick 61
- Round 3, Pick 93
- Round 6
- Round 7, Pick 232
- Round 7, Pick 250
- Round 7, Pick 256
The Rams held onto the better of their two first round selections, giving them a chance to bolster their roster -- be that in the secondary or elsewhere. It's unclear which of Los Angeles' sixth-round picks it is sending to Kansas City. The Rams have two such selections in their possession -- one belonging to them and the other belonging to the Texans.
Trent McDuffie contract
McDuffie has one year left on his current deal. He'll make $13.632 million in 2026, per Spotrac. He agreed terms to a four-year, $124 million contract with his new employers on March 8. He'll fetch $31 million annnually, the highest-mark in league history.
