New Los Angeles Rams cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson have been teammates for the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The pair were part of the same draft class in 2022 and won back-to-back Super Bowl championships with the Chiefs in the first two seasons of their careers.
First, the Rams traded the No. 29 overall pick, 2026 fifth and sixth round picks and a 2027 third-round pick to the Chiefs for McDuffie. Then, Los Angeles signed the All-Pro cornerback to a record four-year, $124 million contract extension.
McDuffie’s long-time teammate, Watson, was still a free agent exploring options with new teams when the Rams made the trade. McDuffie told Watson there was still a chance the duo could reunite in Los Angeles, even though Watson was starting to doubt the possibility.
“I was calling him two days before they even signed him,” McDuffie said in his introductory press conference, per ESPN’s Sarah Barshop. “I’m like, ‘Bruh, you never know. We might get you. We might get you. Keep an open mind.'”
Five days later, the Rams signed Watson to a three-year, $51 million deal.
“And literally it dropped,” McDuffie said to reporters, “I called him again … screaming at the top of my lungs like, ‘Bro, look at this. Can you believe it?'”

Watson and McDuffie Complement Each Other On The Field
In addition to their individual talent on the field, Watson and McDuffie have a lot of chemistry together after playing all four seasons of their NFL careers together.
Watson told reporters in his introductory press conference that their strengths balance each other out. McDuffie is best against quick receivers, while Watson is known for his physicality against bigger receivers.
“I think [matching up with bigger receivers is] my strength”, Watson said, per ESPN. “That’s why I think me and Trent complement each other so well. His strengths are short-area quickness — the small shifty guys. My strengths are the biggest hitter. So we should be pretty diverse. We should be able to match up pretty well against a lot of different looks we get.”
Cornerback was one of the Rams’ biggest weaknesses during the 2025 season. Adding Watson and McDuffie to the roster should give the Rams’ secondary the boost it needs to be capable of winning a Super Bowl championship.
