CAMDEN, N.J. -- As the Philadelphia 76ers move forward with their season, they will need to get contributions from up and down the roster. Players have been in and out of the lineup due to a variety of issues and the Sixers will be looking to others to step up in their absences.
For example, Tyrese Martin, signed to a two-way deal recently, is a player who will be looking to help. He had eight points in Wednesday's win over the Utah Jazz--six coming in the fourth quarter--and was able to give Philadelphia a spark on both ends of the floor.
Martin played with Trendon Watford for one season while with the Brooklyn Nets and has been leaning on Watford to help him transition to Philadelphia. Watford explained what Martin can bring to the Sixers on a regular basis.
"Tyrese can hoop," Watford said at practice on Friday. "We played together, I think a year Brooklyn, maybe two years, maybe both. I can't remember, I think two, but, man, he can shoot the ball. He brings a little toughness to him, bring a little dog in him, and he's, overall, just a good guy and a good person to be around. So I think everybody likes him in the locker room, and he played well last game."
Martin has a scorer's mentality as he can do it in a variety of ways. He scored a career-high 30 points while knocking down eight triples as a member of the Nets in a win over the Phoenix Suns back on Nov. 27, 2024. He has the ability to take games over and get hot in the blink of an eye. That is the type of mentality the Sixers will need down the stretch of the season.
"I know what Tyrese can do," Watford added. "I've seen Tyrese have bigger games and play bigger games, then the little bit he's done here, so he's a good piece and I'm gonna keep helping him with whatever you need. I know how it can be get to a new team in the middle of the year."
The Sixers are currently tied with the Miami Heat for the No. 6 seed in the East heading into the final 20 games. Philadelphia is percentage points ahead of the Heat, but it needs to start stringing wins together as Miami has begun to get hot. A guy like Martin can make a difference for them on the floor.
