WHITESTOWN, Ind. — Boone Treadway walked the first two batters he faced Sunday, Aug. 9.
Then everything changed.
The Hamilton West Side Little League right-hander retired the next three hitters, walked back to the dugout and, minutes later, launched a leadoff home run over the left-field fence.
From there, Treadway and West Side never looked back.
Treadway carried a no-hitter into the third inning, struck out six and drove in two runs as West Side overwhelmed Indiana 11-0 in the Great Lakes Region Tournament at the Little League Central Region Complex.
“I didn’t think I had that juice in me,” Treadway said. “But it felt great all around.”
His performance helped move West Side within two victories of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Ohio will face North Oldham (Kentucky) on Monday at 7 p.m. on ESPN with a spot in the Great Lakes Region championship game on the line.
Treadway’s night initially appeared headed in a different direction.
He issued back-to-back walks to begin the top of the first inning, putting two runners aboard with nobody out.
Treadway never let either runner advance.
He fielded a bunt by the next Indiana batter and threw to third to get the lead runner. Then he struck out the next two hitters to escape the top of the first inning and found his rhythm from there.
“Just throw strikes, let my defense work and stay calm, cool and collected,” Treadway said.
Treadway then launched his leadoff homer on a 1-2 pitch.
West Side manager Tim Nichting saw the outing as another step forward for a player whose work hasn’t always shown up in the box score.
“I think Boone had a breakout night,” Nichting said. “He got the barrel head out, and him on the mound, maybe he’s getting it from his older brother (Brooks) and he wanted to finish the deal. Good for Boone Treadway. He’s a hard worker. Couldn’t happen to a better kid.”
Treadway allowed no hits over 2⅔ innings, striking out six and walking three. Walker Osborne completed the combined no-hitter with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out three.
Treadway's homer came after his father, Badin High School baseball coach Brion Treadway, made a prediction earlier in the day.

“At church, I told my wife, ‘He’s going to hit a home run up here,’” Brion said. “I could just feel it. His swing is where it needs to be now. Tim’s done a great job with him, and I could tell he was getting close.”
Boone found out about the prediction after the game.
“He said at church that he told my mom I was going to hit a home run,” Boone said. “Which is awesome.”
Brion watched it happen from his customary location away from most of the West Side crowd — stationed beyond the outfield in right-center where he could quietly watch his son and study the game.
“I just like to enjoy the game by myself,” Brion said. “I like to see the strike zone, and I like to just watch the whole game happen. I don’t want to be distracted by cheers and chants and things like that. That’s just not my personality.
“I just want to take it all in. I love watching baseball.”
Treadway’s homer started the scoring before West Side buried Indiana beneath a 10-run second inning.
Jack McAdams singled home a run before Zach Hilton, Caiden Trent, Treadway and Leo Feltner drew bases-loaded walks. Bryson Williams delivered a two-run double, Josiah Infante followed with a two-run double and another run scored on a dropped third strike.
“We work on hitting,” Nichting said. “We want to hit. And it’s starting to show a little bit. We’re hitting, we’re disciplined. We’re not chasing a whole lot. We’re battling, and they’re still 12-year-old kids.”
Treadway also impressed Nichting defensively, making a pair of plays on bunts that his manager viewed as examples of the fundamentals West Side repeatedly drills.
And for Boone, it added up to perhaps his most complete performance of the summer.
The moment carried even more meaning because of the Treadway family’s deep roots at West Side. Brion once played for the league, following in the footsteps of his father. Years later, Boone and his brother Brooks continued that tradition, extending a family connection that has included a Treadway son on the field for roughly 15 consecutive years.
Boone is the last.
“West Side Little League is a special place,” Brion said. “My dad played there. I played there. My sons have played there. A lot of great baseball players have gone through there.”
Baseball has already given the family plenty to celebrate this summer.
Brion guided Badin to the Division III state championship in June — the Rams' first state title in 30 years. Boone followed by helping West Side capture its 23rd Ohio state championship.
“Me and my dad talk about it all the time,” Boone said. “You won state. I think we’re going to win regionals and go to Williamsport.”
They’re getting closer.
“We were in a really good spot last year,” Nichting said. “Now we’re two games away from this. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We’ve got to finish the deal.”
“Our dugout is electric,” Boone added. “The fundamentals, the stuff that we’ve worked on, helped a lot. We're just going to keep on going.”
