One of the top position battles for the New Orleans Saints this offseason is WR. When there is a large group of receivers on the roster and such limited spots, you know it's going to get heated. In previous years, this was never really the case, and the Saints actually probably needed more receivers each season. At every training camp, some of the top guys did well, but injuries were always an issue, and depth was clearly an issue. Those depth options also dealt with injuries of their own.
This entire situation was horrible, and it felt like a recurring nightmare each year, but this season is going to be different. The Saints have seen the state of their WR room and knew they needed to make changes, especially after last season. At one point, Chris Olave and Devaughn Vele were the only true starters left, and after they dealt with their own injuries, the Saints had one of the worst groups of WRs in a long time.
Upgrades had to be made, and the Saints did that by selecting Jordyn Tyson, Bryce Lance, and Barion Brown in the 2026 NFL Draft. Adding those three with Olave and Vele, the Saints just nearly filled their entire WR room. It's likely Kellen Moore continues with what they did last season by bringing 6 WRs into the season. If that is the case, there is only going to be one spot open.
Looking at the other WRs on the roster, Ja'lynn Polk stands out as a guy who can likely win that spot. First, just based on momentum, Polk has made strides with the players and staff. Throughout the offseason and since trading for him last season, staff members have noted Polk's work ethic and character, while social media has shown him spending time with Tyler Shough and other players.
Then, there's on the field. Polk is a former second-round pick, and although his time in New England was not good, he has potential in this league. Injuries and drop issues plagued Polk's first years in the league, and these would be reasons why he does not get the spot on the Saints' roster. But that's the beauty of training camp and preseason. We are going to see if he has become a consistent pass catcher and reach a bit of that potential many believe he has. If that can happen, the Saints' WR room may be one of the best in the league.
