Torres fires Spain to World Cup triumph with extra-time winner against Argentina

Spain have won the 2026 World Cup after Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina.

Luis de la Fuente’s side were dominant throughout the game but failed to make it count until the 106th minute, when substitute Torres finished high into the net after being set up by Nico Williams.

Argentina had been reduced to ten men in second-half stoppage time, when Enzo Fernandez, who had earlier been booked for dissent, was shown a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Pau Cubarsi.

It is the second World Cup Spain have won as a nation, and means they have won back-to-back major tournaments after their Euro 2024 triumph.

But for Lionel Messi and Argentina, they were denied consecutive World Cup titles having failed to manage a single shot on goal against Spain until extra time.
