The Raptors will have to wait to officially receive Leonard from the Clippers.
After what was a disappointing end to an impressive season last year, the Toronto Raptors made a statement splash in the offseason with the acquisition of Kawhi Leonard in a blockbuster with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Toronto brought home the star that helped bring a championship to the city in 2019, spending a steep price to do so in trading Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and a handful of draft picks. However, the trade has yet to be made official nearly two weeks after it was announced.
On Thursday, it was announced that the trade will not be complete until the NBA concludes its investigation into the Clippers organization. The investigation is centered on whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap by funding Leonard through a $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-bankrupt company.
While the deal being halted may cause room for concern, both teams remain optimistic that the trade will get completed within a matter of time.
In a recent segment, NBA on Prime Insider Chris Haynes reported that the Raptors were unaware of the possibility that the trade would be put on hold. Despite owning knowledge of the investigation, they did not believe it could potentially hold off the deal.
“They were very comfortable in making this deal, but they did not know that the league was going to put a halt on the trade,” Haynes said. “Both sides still feel like this thing will be resolved, a trade will occur.”
Initially, the Raptors went into the trade not thinking they would run into any hiccups. Instead, they now embrace a position where they may have to accept the consequences if Leonard were to be disciplined as a result of the investigation.
In a statement that was released on Thursday, the Raptors made it clear that they eagerly await Leonard’s return to the team and acknowledged the risk of an outcome impacting Leonard.
Haynes believes the trade will be complete at some point soon. It has been clear that both teams also believe the same through their released statements.
“I do believe that the deal will ultimately go through, I don’t know what the NBA, what their investigation, I don’t know what they’re going to find.”
Currently, the official end date for the investigation to conclude is unknown, but it is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
“This investigation has been going on for a while,” Haynes said. “And yet we still have no smoke and gun.”
