The Toronto Blue Jays' offensive woes continue to persist.
The Blue Jays were shut out in two consecutive games in a series loss against the Seattle Mariners over the weekend and scored just two runs in the first of a three-game series.
Toronto looked to change its fortunes in the first of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants, which took place Monday at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
The Blue Jays' lineup was again unable to get much going and fell to the Giants 10-1 on Monday.
The only run came via a home run hit by recent third baseman Kazuma Okamoto in the bottom of the sixth. His solo homer broke a streak of 29 consecutive innings without a run for Toronto.
Okamoto's homer was his team-leading 20th of the season. In his first year in major league baseball, he's slashing .235/.315/.458 with a .773 OPS in 88 games and has hit 11 doubles with his aforementioned 20 homers with 55 RBIs.
The Blue Jays' streak of 29 scoreless innings was three frames away from tying a franchise-worst streak, which came May 12-16, 1981, in the team's fifth season of existence.
Toronto starter Kevin Gausman struggled in the outing against the Giants. He struck out eight, walked six (one intentionally) and allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Gausman was frank about the team's struggles in a postgame interview.
His following comments were shared via a post on "X" from broadcaster Hazel Mae:
"I think the biggest thing is consistency, and then fundamentals," Gausman said. " ... The things that we were so good at last year, we haven't been as good at this year. ... whether it's fielding the ball or running the bases, or protecting the baseball."
Gausman has a 4.32 ERA this season and has fanned 108 batters in 106.1 innings pitched across 19 starts.
The loss dropped Toronto to 40-48 on the season. The team is 12 games out of first place in the American League East behind the Tampa Bay Rays and 3.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the American League behind the Texas Rangers.
The Blue Jays will have five more games to get some momentum going before the All-Star break: the final two games against San Francisco and a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
Toronto will play the Giants in the second of the three-game series at 9:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Oracle Park.
