Jul. 21—Ezra Elliott continues to make Hoopeston proud.
An IHSA wrestling champion in 2019, the Cornjerker legend won his UFC debut on Saturday night in Oklahoma City.
"It's the best thing ever," said his uncle, Dave Elliott, who watched on Paramount+ from his home in Hoopeston. "The whole town's pulling for him. There are a lot of people here who have supported him since high school."
Ezra's parents, Amanda and John, made the 12-hour drive from Hoopeston to Oklahoma City to watch their son beat Damien Anderson by unanimous decision. Afterward, Ezra said, "I'm just a hard-working kid from a small town."
Exactly, Hoopeston police Chief Chris Kelnhofer said. Ezra's coach at Hoopeston Area, Kelnhofer had an inkling he'd do big things at the professional level because of a work ethic that is "unmatched. ... We gave him the tools but he built what he is. There's no one more self-motivated," he said. "It's amazing to see him make it at that level."
Ezra, a two-time News-Gazette All-Area wrestler who went 41-0 in 2019, has yet to lose as a pro.
"I'll be a household name," he said Saturday.
