The Tennessee-Vanderbilt three-game baseball series concluded Sunday. No. 10 Vanderbilt (36-16, 15-12 SEC) defeated No. 12 Tennessee (39-13, 15-12 SEC), 7-5, at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The in-state series was a top 15 matchup in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
The Commodores won the series, 2-1. Sunday's finale lasted five hours, 28 minutes due to a one hour, 57-second weather delay in the sixth inning.
Following game No. 3, eighth-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello discussed the two teams having an altercation as the contest ended.
"Yeah it's overrated," Vitello said. "I mean, their guys are looking into our dugout, you know as they high-five, but it was a feisty day all along, so are you going to blame him? Then, you know, Hunter Ensley’s, that's Hunter Ensley's field out there, so I think he was the, I don't know who was the first one to say, I don't want to say that, but you know, if you're on their side you yell poor loser, and if you're on our side you yell don't do that on our field, or you're a poor winner.
“That's blown out of proportion. If anything, people that were watching for the first part, and then, I don't know if the second part was televised, saw a super regional type game or a playoff type atmosphere on the field, and they made more plays than we did."
