Tony Romo made some heartfelt headlines Thursday at the 125th Wisconsin Amateur Championship but not for his golf. He finished in a tie for 73rd, well down the leaderboard, but did make time for a fan.
Romo, who played high school golf in his hometown of Burlington along with football and basketball, showed a young fan some football drills at West Bend Country Club. That caught the eye of reporter Jim Owczarski, who snapped a few photos.
On Friday, Romo made headlines in much different way.
According to a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which, like Golfweek, is a part of the USA Today Co. network, Romo was arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, an incident that happened later in the day Thursday after his final round.
Romo was pulled over driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee shortly after 6 p.m. and performed poorly on a field sobriety test, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. A first offense for OWI traditionally carries a fine in Wisconsin. The Milwaukee County report gives him a court date of Sept. 21.
The Journal Sentinel typically doesn't name suspects until charges have been filed in court but is making an exception because Romo is a public figure. An avid golfer who appears regularly in the state amateur event as well as various celebrity tournaments, is color commentator for "NFL on CBS" and a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.
Romo shot 35 over and tied for 73rd in the Wisconsin Amateur, which was won by Spencer Turtz, who shot 3 over.
