Tomahawks edge Danbury Hat Tricks after two-goal third period

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Johnstown Tomahawks netted a pair of third-period goals to defeat the Danbury Hat Tricks 3-1 Friday night at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial.

Ben Norris netted his sixth of the season to break a 1-all tie, and captain Nick Jarmain added his 33rd goal into an empty net with 22 seconds left as a crowd of 2,758 watched.

The seventh-place Tomahawks (21-21-8) have 50 points, four behind the sixth-place Hat Tricks (24-21-6), who currently hold the final playoff spot in the NAHL East Division.

The teams meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday night.

Johnstown’s Kirby Perler scored the game’s first goal with 3:39 left in the opening period.

Danbury’s Matt Shpungin tied the game with under 4 minutes remaining in the second.

Tomahawks goaltender Zack Ferris made 21 saves on 22 shots. Danbury’s Jon Dukaric had 28 saves on 30 shots.

The Tomahawks honored Johnstown’s Daniel Barefoot, a Richland High School and Penn State University graduate who competed on the Team USA men’s skeleton in the Milan Cortina Olympic Games.

Saturday night will be Hockey Heritage Night, with the former Johnstown Chiefs ECHL franchise in the spotlight. Several former Chiefs players and staff, as well as Johnstown Jets icons, plan to attend.
