Nothing comes for free when legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady gives a compliment.

During a May 16 commencement speech at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business, Brady praised former New England Patriots receiver Danny Amendola.

Brady described to graduates how the undrafted free agent stepped up during a key fourth down in the Patriots’ incredible 2017 Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons.

But the GOAT could not resist taking a swipe at Texas Tech, Amendola’s alma mater, on the way to his point. Of course, Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback some experts say may pass Brady as the best of all time, played for the Red Raiders as well.

“I hope you guys find colleagues like Danny,” Brady said. “Having business school friends are great, don’t get me wrong. But sometimes you need a kid from a glorified community college that can bail your ass out of any jam. If you want to achieve great things, surround yourself with people like him.”

Glorified community college?

At least when it comes to its football program, Texas Tech is hardly a glorified community college.

The Red Raiders finished 12-2 in 2025, winning the Big 12 and earning a bye in the College Football Playoff. Three Texas Tech defensive players were taken with the first 49 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Backing from oil tycoon Cody Campbell keeps the Red Raiders in the hunt for top talent. Texas Tech ranked No. 2 in On3’s transfer-portal rankings for 2026. Unfortunately, though, Texas Tech is likely to lose former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby after he admitted to gambling on games. Sorsby has filed suit to regain his eligibility.

Brady’s inspirational speech

Brady’s commencement speech originally went viral for the jab he took at former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. He described Belichick as “a cranky old coach who cuts the sleeves off his sweatshirt and yells at you all day.”

But the seven-time Super Bowl champion had a real message in his speech. The theme focused on the 99.7 percent chance of losing the Patriots faced when they fell behind 28-3 against the Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Brady detailed everything that happened — and all the underdogs who contributed — when New England pulled out the 34-28 overtime victory.

“My story can become your story,” the Fox Sports analyst and part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders said at the end of the speech. “But yours will be unique, written by you. Remember this: Testing your greatness always comes in the form of a contest, where preparation meets opportunity. And the winner is the one who just won’t quit.”
