Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken continues to reiterate that not much matters in the competition for the team's starting quarterback job between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson.
The first six days of practice are dedicated to installing different elements and practicing certain situations. That continues for two more days, as well.
The real evaluation starts when the team starts, once the offense starts actually scheming up a game plan against their defense. That's coming on Day 9 and beyond. Then three preseason games, and even a pivotal joint practice with the Bills, will serve as the most important of stages for each QB to stand out.
Now, Monken's plan for the preseason games has been revealed.
Via a report from Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, Monken apparently plans on starting each QB for one preseason game and then an answer should reveal itself.
"He's gonna start one quarterback the first preseason game, the other one will start the second one. And that most likely the leader of the competition will start the third," said Wolfe. "The next week is gonna decide who gets each of those games."
That plan seems to fall in line with how Monken has handled the battle to this point on the practice field, as each quarterback has rotated every other day with the first-team offense.
It would only make sense that they also each get a preseason game to showcase what they can do before a final decision is made.
Monken initially said he would have liked to have the QB situation sorted out by the end of spring workouts in June. However, by the time mandatory minicamp wrapped the first-time head man felt both Sanders and Watson had proved they were worthy of being named the starter and that the competition was still too close to call.
The clock is ticking to make a final decision prior to Week 1 of the 2026 season on Sept. 13.
Monken certainly knows that, and while he hasn't set an official date to name a starter, it appears like sometime after the team's joint practice with Buffalo and their matchup in preseason game No. 2, he'll be ready to reveal his answer to the biggest question facing the franchise during training camp.
