With the Cleveland Browns hiring Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their new head coach, the AFC North has three new head coaches joining holdover Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Pittsburgh Steelers introduced Mike McCarthy as their new head coach earlier in the week. The Baltimore Ravens' new head coach is Mount St. Joseph University graduate Jesse Minter, the son of former Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Rick Minter.
Here are some facts, related to Taylor and the Bengals, about the Ravens' Minter, the Browns' Monken and the Steelers' McCarthy:
Minter was born May 9, 1983; Taylor was born May 10, 1983.
Both have served on the University of Cincinnati Bearcats' coaching staff, but not simultaneously.
Taylor was UC's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016, before joining Sean McVay on the Los Angeles Rams' staff.
Minter was a grad assistant for the Bearcats in 2007 and 2008.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported in Jan. 2019 that the Bengals requested permission to interview Monken, then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator.
The Bengals hired Taylor as head coach about one month later.
Former Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Bucs' QB in 2019, said Monken had the "It Factor" needed to be an NFL head coach.
Monken wasn't hired as a head coach during that offseason. The Browns hired him as offensive coordinator.
Monken spent one season as the Browns' OC. He spent three seasons as the University of Georgia Bulldogs' offensive coordinator and three seasons as the Ravens' OC before returning to Cleveland.
Interestingly, the Browns reportedly pursued McCarthy as head coach in Jan. 2019. Days later, the Browns promoted assistant Freddie Kitchens to head coach.
With Monken and Minter becoming first-time NFL head coaches, McCarthy is the only AFC North coach Taylor has faced.
In Dec. 2024, the Bengals earned a 27-20 NFL Week 14 win against McCarthy's Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on ABC/ESPN's Monday Night Football behind a huge night from quarterback Joe Burrow and receiver Ja'Marr Chase, with help from a Cowboy blunder on a blocked punt by former Bengal Nick Vigil.
The Bengals recovered when Amani Oruwariye touched the ball after Vigil's block of the kick, and then-Bengals rookie Maema Njongmeta recovered.
Earlier in the game, then-Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt drew an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty on the Cowboys' Luke Schoonmaker late in the third quarter, and McCarthy appeared to react by telling an official he thought Pratt's reaction was a "f------ flop."
