The Washington Commanders will select No. 7 in less than three weeks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Longtime NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay spoke with Joel Klatt of Fox Sports on Monday, discussing the NFL draft. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love was one of the focal points during the discussion. Commanders fans will be interested because McShay was discussing the teams selected before the Commanders.

Love far out-ranks other running backs in the draft, and for teams needing or really wanting a high-quality running back, Love becomes the center of the discussion.

"It is why we are looking at teams like Arizona that need a running back," McShay said. "They are picking at 3, and Tennessee (Titans) is picking at four. Giants (5)? It depends on (Cam) Skattebo and what his health is. Certainly, Love would provide an upgrade and create an attack there with John Harbaugh (newly hired head coach)."

It's true that all three teams, the Cardinals, Titans and Giants selecting Love would be a big upgrade at running back for them. On the other hand, selecting that high at 3, 4, or 5 means each team could theoretically select the best player at their position in the draft. For instance, want the best speed rusher in the draft? Then David Bailey (Texas Tech) should be available. Want the best corner? Then, Mansoor Delane is yours. Can't resist the best offensive tackle? Francis Mauigoa is your man. Sonny Styles is the best linebacker.

But of course, if you want the best running back, then Love is yours for the taking. It's a good position for those teams to be in because if they so desire, they could take their turns at selecting the top-rated players at their respective positions.

Back to McShay talking Love, possibly going to the Giants at No. 5.

"Now all of the sudden you've got Jeremiyah Love, Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy with a quarterback who can run as well in Jaxson Dart. But I think it is why we are all looking and saying maybe he (Love) falls to Washington and No. 7, because he is a running back and because of the economics of it," McShay said.

"But again, just about every team I talk to in the league, he is first, second, and in one case, third guy on their board right now."

If Love is in the top three of several teams' boards right now, he is most likely going very early. I couldn't help but notice that McShay made no mention of the Browns at No. 6. Don't know what to make of that, other than the Browns have several offensive positions of need, so perhaps McShay honestly doesn't know what to make of the Browns either?

It could be that the Commanders won't have to consider whether they should take a running back No. 7 in the draft. If Love is already taken before the Commanders go on the clock, they might have an opportunity to draft a top-ranked player at his respective position.
